Hi there friends! I’m Vasika, or as some people call me, V. I live in Washington state and am currently a senior in high school. I grew up bilingual, speaking both English and Cambodian, and I am currently taking French in school. I’m super grateful to have this opportunity to learn Korean as well. I am a dancer (not a very good one, I’ll admit) and a member of my school’s dance team. This fall I will be attending the University of Washington, and I intend to pursue a career in dentistry. I am only 5 feet tall, but I have a lot of energy and am very loud. Not to mention, I love to eat quite a lot… I also enjoy making people laugh so expect my many attempts at being funny.
Hello everybody! My name is Joseph Estrada and I’m a junior at Stephen F. Austin High School in Austin, Texas. Through growing up in Paris, Miami, and Austin, I’ve had the fortune of being exposed to numerous languages and cultures, and I look forward to seeing a new one. My biggest passions are policy debate and chess, but outside of school I love taking Taekwondo and reading. I’m extremely excited to meet everyone and experience Korean culture, food, and language this summer!
Hi my name is Zoe Garcia and I’m from Houston, Texas. I’m a rising junior at YES Prep East End. I love reading, playing chess, and learning about new things. Currently I am involved with yearbook, National Honor Society, debate, and rocket team. This is my first experience out of the United States, so I am very excited! I can’t wait to meet y’all.
Hullo y’all! My name is Emiliano Gómez and I’m a rising junior at West Campus High School in Sacramento, CA. On my free time I enjoy playing tennis, running, serving on political campaigns or organizations, reading about economics, and playing with my dog: Ferris Bueller. My interest in foreign cultures and languages stems from my childhood of growing up bilingual and my desire to see and learn something new every day. Hope to see you all and to start exploring Korea soon.
Hi! My name is Michael Ivy and I am a rising senior at North Central High School in Indianapolis, IN. I love being outdoors and hiking at state parks. I became passionate about learning about South Korea after my best friend started listening to K-pop/K-rap and had me to listen to it as well. This will be my first time ever leaving the US and I can’t wait to meet all of you!
Hey everyone! My name is Joseph and I am a rising senior at D.W. Daniel High School in Clemson, SC. I grew up in Thailand, living there since I was 3 years old and moved to the States 2 years ago. When I lived in Thailand I loved to eat in local restaurants on the sides of the roads. There’s something about eating that makes one more a part of a culture. Eating with every-day people I had never met before and would never see again made me more a part of the country than years of experience or education there ever could. I can’t wait to try it again this summer in Korea! Here in Clemson I have been involved with my school’s literary magazine and our National Science Honor Society chapter. However, one of the most fun extracurricular activities that I participate in is contra dancing (a combination of square and swing dancing). That’s why when I looked on the schedule for the program this summer and saw that we would be K-pop dancing, I went crazy! I can’t wait to meet all of you in a few weeks and embark on a journey that I am sure will be unforgettable!
Hello! My name is May and I live in Minnesota. I am currently a senior at Mounds View High school and will be attending University of Minnesota in the fall. Some of my hobbies include photography, pottery, and drawing. I love to eat and travel. I can’t wait to go to Songdo with everyone to explore the Korean culture and language. I look forward to meeting everyone.
Hey everyone! My name is Jessica, and I am a rising senior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in NYC. I grew up in Foshan, China and Hong Kong, and I immigrated to the US when I was eight. As a cultural broker between my Chinese family and American culture, I speak both Mandarin and Cantonese fluently, and I also study Spanish at school. While I’m not busy studying for my SATs and regents exams, you can find me trying exotic foods, biking around Central Park, capturing nature with my camera, and de-stressing through yoga, badminton, and swimming. I’m passionate about editorial journalism and alleviating humanitarian issues, so I am an editor of my school newspaper and secretary/treasurer of my school’s UNICEF club. I fell in love with Korea because of its rich history, yummy foods, and soulful Korean ballads. This is my first time traveling outside the States, so I’m grateful for this life-changing opportunity! I’m so excited to meet you all, and let’s explore South Korea together! (:
Hello! My name is Caysie Reuter, I’m from Woodstock, Illinois and I will be a junior this fall at Woodstock High School. In school, my favorite subjects are Chinese, history, and art. I also play trumpet in the varsity band. Outside of school, I do competitive figure skating and I am a member of the Chicagoland Ice theater. My love and interest in Korea began a few years ago with watching Korean music videos online. It then turned into a huge passion for the country and its unique culture and language. Having in interest in the country has opened many doors for me and I never would have thought I would get to travel to Korea while in high school! I am very excited to meet everyone and cannot wait to experience this amazing summer with all of you!
